Middlebury

Almost from the year of its founding in 1761, Middlebury has been a town of significance in the state of Vermont—a leader in innovation, manufacturing, agriculture, and education. And what President Timothy Dwight of Yale penned in 1810 is still true today:

“On the whole Middlebury is one of the most prosperous and most virtuous towns in New England.”

The Vermont marble industry was born here, supplying markets from Quebec to Georgia. Here, too, were found the second set of power looms built in New England, the first nail and window sash factories in Vermont, and later, mills supplying Victorian wood detailing for much of the west-central part of the state. Middlebury is the home of the first community-founded college in the United States, the first institution of higher learning for women, and the first chartered village museum. It was a center for the Merino sheep industry and later for the breeding of Morgan horses.

Today is no different. Our spirit of innovation, our unquenchable thirst of curiosity and our strength as a community makes Middlebury a very special place to live and discover.

Our community is engaged and committed. Look no further than the Better Middlebury Partnership (BMP), a civic organization dedicated to making the Greater Middlebury community a better place to live, work and play. The BMP is excited to support this website, as well as local businesses through signature community events, and various initiatives.

If you want to get involved, we love volunteers! We offer a variety of opportunities such as event assistance and community development work. Jump in and help make Middlebury better than ever!
